Bronchiectasis is a condition where the lungs become damaged and prone to infections.
Individuals with bronchiectasis can develop chronic wet cough, experience “flare ups” that require time spent in hospital and have reduced quality of life. Our understanding of bronchiectasis is less developed than that of other lung disease, such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.
We established the Western Australian Paediatric Bronchiectasis Program to understand how bronchiectasis develops, what causes ‘flare ups’, which treatments are most effective, and to improve the lives of children living with bronchiectasis.
Western Australian Paediatric Bronchiectasis Cohort Study
Can you help us with our study to understand how a lung condition called bronchiectasis develops during childhood?
We are looking for children and teenagers under 18 years of age:
- who do not have a history of respiratory illness or breathing problems, and
- who are willing to perform lung function testing in Nedlands, Western Australia.
Collection of lung function data from healthy children and teenagers will significantly enhance our understanding of lung function in children living with bronchiectasis.
Through this study we hope to improve the health outcomes of young people with bronchiectasis, which remains a largely underdiagnosed and neglected lung disease in children and adolescents worldwide.

Community involvement
The Kids Research Institute Australia and Perth Children's Hospital researchers are looking for members of the community to join the Western Australian Paediatric Bronchiectasis Consumer Reference Group. This group is for parents and carers of children who have bronchiectasis. We want the group to be involved with:
- Supporting the development of partnerships between consumers, researchers, The Kids Research Institute Australia and Perth Children’s Hospital.
- Providing a consumer perspective to both medical and research aspects of bronchiectasis.
- Advising about research and clinical priorities, practice, and policies.
Improving the quality and relevance of research and clinical activities through consumer involvement
