Phage WA is committed to tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through phage therapy.
Our team actively collect phages that target specific bacteria, ensure these are safe for use and aim to treat humans with these phages through phage therapy. We are also involved in clinical trials to ensure continued and optimal use of phage therapy.
Phage WA operate within the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre, a powerhouse partnership between The Kids Research Institute Australia, Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation and Perth Children’s Hospital.
The power of phage
By many counts, Bacteriophages - or 'Phages' - are superheroes. There are specialised viruses, found all around us in nature, which only kill certain bacteria.
Researchers are exploring ways that phages can be harnessed for good, helping people who experience antibiotic resistant bacterial infections.
Recent activities
Our Phage WA team recently visited Kalgoorlie!
Associate Professor Anthony Kicic began conversations with local communities about co-designing research to to discover local phages on country to help treat local infections, with Minister for Science and Innovation Stephen Dawson visiting to learn more about our work.

The team also had exciting activity booths at The Kids STEM Festival, where budding bacteriophage hunters got hands-on, finding and building phages.
